The Southern Pacific Railroad Scrapbook, 1931
DESCRIPTION
The building of the Pearl Street viaduct by the Southern Pacific Railroad was one of the most
important issues and events in Beaumont in 1931. The matter of a $900,000 dollar bond issue
was at hand for the citizens of Beaumont. The viaduct was supported by many prominent
Beaumont civic groups and individuals. Newspaper articles in this scrapbook collection were
written by such prominent citizens as Mayor E. A. Fletcher and George W. Carroll. The bond
issue was passed July 28, 1931, by 993 votes.
The collection contains newspaper clippings from one scrapbook and two folders. The folders
contain the original blueprint for the viaduct and letters pertaining to the donation of the items
to the Tyrrell Public Library in 1937.
