DESCRIPTION
The Beaumont Symphony Society formed in 1950, following
several visits to the city by the Houston and Dallas symphony
orchestras. Under the leadership of Veazy Rainwater and Gladys
Harned—Quilliam, the Society sponsored numerous guest
performances by out of town symphonies, a program that sparked
interest in the formation of Beaumont's own symphony. The
Beaumont Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Jay Dietzer,
held its first performance on May 12, 1953
The Beaumont Women's Symphony League officially formed in
1955, consisting of members of the Symphony Society and the
Chamber of Commerce. The League originally assisted the Symphony
with ticket sales but quickly moved to organizing major fund
raising drives. Today, the League sponsors the Viennese Ball and
Debutante program, and the Symphony of Trees, both very
successful fund raising drives.
This collection contains scrapbooks from the Beaumont
Symphony Society and the Women's League. Scrapbooks 1-4
represent the early years of the Society and its formation. The
remainder of the collection focuses on the Beaumont Women's
Symphony League, its formation and fund raising activities. The
scrapbooks are arranged in chronological order and contain
newspaper clippings, photographs, program guides, correspondence,
and newsletters.
