DESCRIPTION
Florence Stratton was born in 1883 in Brazoria, Texas.
After graduation from Troy Formal College, Troy, Alabama, in
1905, Stratton moved to Beaumont and lived with her sister, Mrs.
Walter H. Stevens. For several years she was a member of the
faculty of Miss Austin's Private School in Beaumont. In 1907,
she entered journalism as the Beaumont Journal's society editor
and in 1920 Stratton joined the Beaumont Enterprise as society
editor. Susie Spindletop's Weekly Newsletter appeared every
Sunday in the Enterprise as a column of light gossip and local
history. Florence Stratton died in 1938.
The collection consists of clippings arranged
chronologically from 1927 to 1938, yet it is unlikely that they
represent a complete set of Susie Spindletop's Newsletters. The
column related vignettes and anecdotes of Beaumont citizens and
included jokes, words of wisdom, strange happenings elsewhere in
the country, and events in Beaumont.
