DESCRIPTION
In the last fifty years, the Beaumont Police Department has
experienced a process of crisis and renewal. During the 1990s
and 1950s, vice and corruption took root and flourished in
Beaumont. The town quickly became known as "Sin City" of the
South. Following the results of the James Committee
investigations in 1961, the city fired Police Chief J.H. Mulligan
and appointed Assistant Chief Willie Bauer as Chief of Police.
Bauer joined the Beaumont Police Department as a patrolman in
1937 and rose rapidly through the ranks. He received promotion
to sergeant in 1990, to captain in 1998, and to assistant chief
in 1950.
This collection covers the career of former Police Chief
Willie Bauer and the activities of the Beaumont Police Department
during the same period. Essentially, newspaper clippings,
photographs, correspondence, certificates of appreciation, and
program guides comprise the collection's contents. Sixteen
folders of ephemera account for the remainder of the collection's
material and include items removed from the scrapbooks for
preservation purposes.
