The Beaumont branch of the League of Women Voters formed in
1946 at the Edison Hotel. The Organization received its official
charter in November. A press release declared that the League
intended to "investigate civic projects and programs of public
interest affecting the area and submit to the public its
findings." The new organization immediately launched an
aggressive drive to secure improved drainage in Jefferson County.
In 1947, the League sponsored a weekly radio talk show called the
"Citizens Forum." For much of its history, the League has taken
particular interest in Beaumont school board elections,
sponsoring candidate forums and debates.
This collection comprises three scrapbooks of newspaper
clippings and photographs spanning the period from 1946 to 1985.
Newspaper clippings are arranged chronologically, describing
organizational meetings and events sponsored by the league. The
Beaumont League of Women Voters did not restrict its activities to
non -controversial or local issues. The league was very much involved
in issues confronting the state legislature and led the local effort
to repeal the poll tax. At the same time, the league was active in
addressing the need for a minimum housing code in Beaumont. For the
most part, however, the League concentrated on voter education and
participation.
No restrictions apply.
