DESCRIPTION
The state organization of the Daughters of the Republic of
Texas formed in 1895, but it was not until 1939 that a chapter formed
in Beaumont. In that year, the Tejas Chapter of the Daughters of
the Republic of Texas organized with the goal of encouraging
historical research and the preservation of important Texas
documents and records. The organization immediately involved itself
in several civic activities. For example, in 1990, the Chapter
established the Driskell Scholarship for Lamar students majoring
in Texas history. The organization also sponsored a series of
historical newspaper articles. In 1999, the Chapter donated $900.00
to furnish a room at Baptist Hospital. By 1957, the organization
counted 97 active members.
This collection contains two scrapbooks spanning the years
1999-1969. Newspaper clippings, organizational records,
correspondence, typed manuscripts of historical articles, and
program guides comprise the collection's content. Newspaper
clippings offer historical anecdotes, trivia, and interesting
vignettes concerning Texas history. Organizational pamphlets
include membership rosters, and a program for the coming year.
No restrictions apply.
