Since 1929, Beaumonters have enjoyed semi-professional
operatic performances produced by local artists. Formed in 1963,
the Beaumont Civic Opera continued the tradition of the Beaumont
Opera Workshop. The Beaumont Civic Opera held early performances
at the Stephen F. Austin Sr. High School and the Jefferson Theater.
Dr. Peter Paul Fuchs, a noted expert on Italian operas, directed
productions in the 1960s and early 1970s. The organization
performed operas in English and recruited dancers from the Sproule
School of Dance. Today, the Beaumont Civic Opera presents its
productions at the Julie Rogers Theater in downtown Beaumont.
This collection contains three large scrapbooks comprised of
newspaper clippings, photographs, program guides, correspondence,
poster boards, and newsletters. All material is arranged
chronologically by individual operatic production. Scrapbook 1 begins
in 1954 and traces the history of the Beaumont Opera Workshop up to the
formation of the Beaumont Civic Opera. Scrapbooks 2 and 3 cover the
history of the Beaumont Civic Opera until 1979. The collection also
contains two folders of photographs and one folder of ephemera.
