Collect Hazard and Response Information Using MSDS

I. Objective
Given scenarios involving known hazardous materials/WMD, the operations level
responder shall collect hazard and response information using MSDS, available reference
materials, governmental authorities, and shippers and manufacturer’s information, and shall meet
the following requirements:
A. Identify two ways to obtain an MSDS in an emergency.
B. Using an MSDS for a specified material, identify the following hazard and response
information:
1. Physical and chemical characteristics
2. Physical hazards of the material
3. Health hazards of the material
4. Signs and symptoms of exposure
5. Routes of entry
6. Permissible exposure limits
7. Responsible party contact
8. Precautions for safe handling (including hygiene practices, protective measures,
and procedures for cleanup of spills and leaks)
9. Applicable control measures, including personal protective equipment
10. Emergency and first-aid procedures
II. Instructions – Procedures for Achieving the Objective
Given a material safety data sheet (MSDS) and a MSDS worksheet, you shall identify the
following information and record it on the worksheet:
A. Physical and chemical characteristics
B. Physical hazards of the material
C. Health hazards of the material
D. Signs and symptoms of exposure
E. Routes of entry
F. Permissible exposure limits
G. Responsible party contact
H. Precautions for safe handling (including hygiene practices, protective measures, and
procedures for cleanup of spills and leaks)
I. Applicable control measures, including personal protective equipment
J. Emergency and first-aid procedures
You will begin on my instruction to start. The skill will end when you state to me that you
have completed all of the identified steps. Do you understand these instructions?
