Given the identity of various hazardous materials (name, UN/NA identification number,
or type placard) the firefighter shall identify the following response information using the most
current edition of the DOT, North American Emergency Response Guidebook.
A. Emergency action to be taken (fire, spill, or leak and first aid);
B. Personal protective equipment necessary; and
C. Initial isolation and protective action distances

I will provide you with the most current edition of the DOT North American Emergency
Response Guidebook. I will give you one of the following: the name of a hazardous material, the
identification number of a chemical or show you a type of placard and type of response (fire,
spill, or leak). You shall verbalize to me the necessary response information for the given
scenario. The name of hazardous material or identification number will be listed in the current
edition of the DOT North American Emergency Response Guidebook. You will begin on my
instruction to start. The skill will lend when you state to me that you have completed all of the
identified steps. You will have six minutes to complete this skill. Do you understand these
instructions?
