The firefighter, given the necessary equipment, shall demonstrate sounding a roof for
structural integrity and demonstrate ventilating both pitched and flat roofs.

Standing on the ground near the designated area, you shall climb a ladder to the edge of
the roof and use an axe to sound the roof for structural integrity. Using the roof ladder, you shall
climb to a designated position on the roof and cut a 4 foot X 4 foot opening at the place
indicated. The hole shall be continuously cut until all sides are cut and the cut-out falls to the
ground. You will be required to both verbalize key steps and complete mandatory steps while
performing this skill. You will begin on my instruction to start. The skill will end when you state
to me that you have completed all of the identified steps. Do you understand these instructions?

E. Extra 4 foot x 8 foot sheets of plywood
F. Ventilation Saw: Chain Saw, K-12 Saw
Note: The firefighter shall accomplish the skills wearing “FULL PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING FOR STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTER” as required by the Texas Commission
on Fire Protection to include helmet, gloves, coat, trousers, boots, hood, and SCBA.
