The firefighter shall describe and demonstrate techniques for actions when trapped or
disoriented in a fire situation or hostile environment. The evaluation will involve one of the
following techniques: (which will be selected by the Supervisor)
A. Reversing the entry path by keeping in contact with walls at all times.
B. Reversing the entry path by following a hose line to the exit (feeling couplings).
C. Activate Personal Safety System (PASS), portable radio.
D. Reversing the entry path with life line (rope).

While wearing protective clothing, the self-contained breathing apparatus face piece will
be taped over, darkened to eliminate vision, or a smoke charged atmosphere will be utilized. You
will demonstrate techniques for the actions required when trapped or disoriented in a fire
situation or hostile environment. You will begin on my instruction to start. The skill will end
when you state to me that you have completed all of the identified steps. Do you understand
these instructions?

Place a charged hose line inside the structure with twists, turns, and loops or use multiple
sections of hose. Place the firefighter in the center of structure and attempt to disorient him/her.
The firefighter will not be allowed to review the performance steps at the time of testing.

A. Required 1-½” or 2-½” hose line and nozzle
B. Portable radio (simulation of communication)
C. 100’ life line
Note : The firefighter shall accomplish the skill wearing “ FULL PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING FOR STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTERS” as required by the Texas
Commission on Fire Protection to include helmet, gloves, coat, trousers, boots, SCBA,
and PASS device.
