"December 15, 1976
Honorable Mayor and City Council
City of Beaumont
Beaumont, Texas
Dear Lady and Gentlemen:
I met Tuesday afternoon with representatives of the Firefighters
Union to discuss possible settlement of the pending dispute. On advice
of counsel, the firefighters preferred not to talk on tape. We, there-
fore, made minutes of the meeting and had all persons present to sign
them. I am attaching a copy of the propo-sed minutes to this letter.
The firefighters were of the view that if they ultimately win their
lawsuit, the cost to the City will be much greater and the citizens will
get less fire protection than they will under their proposed settlement.
They also indicated that if the City wins on appeal or if the citizens
vote the act out, a strike is likely.
I shall be happy to discuss this matter with you at your conven-
ience.
Sincerely,
/s/ Kenneth Wall
City Attorney
