Mayor Meyers said that he and other members of Council have had the
pleasure, mixed with a deep sense of pride in members of the Police
Department, to be involved in the DARE Program instituted at the Junior
High School level. Mayor Meyers asked Sergeant E. O. "Sonny" Chambers
of the Police Department to explain the program.
SERGEANT CHAMBERS:
. . .Mr. Mayor, Council, and Citizens, we come before you today as
representatives of the Police Department to thank you for your
cooperation in the DARE Program. Last week approximately 1, 000 6th
graders from our city's middle schools graduated from the DARE Program.
DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It is nationally
accepted by police departments and educators as the premier drug abuse
resistance program in the nation today. Without the cooperation of you
people on the Council, BISD, and our citizenry, this would not be
possible. We know that to train our three officers to be DARE
instructors, to keep them in the schools almost full time, and to buy

the supplies that's necessary to put the program on, does not come
cheaply. It comes at a great expense to the City. For this, we
appreciate it. We come today to thank you. As a token of our
appreciation, we would like for you to accept one of the tee-shirts that
we gave the kids at their graduation last week.
Patrolmen Clara Pierson and Gabriel Duriso presented tee-shirts to each
