R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, 4 ,701 Texans were killed in traffic accidents
during 1981 , the fifth record year in a row for traffic deaths and a
forty-six percent ( 46% ) increase in the past five ( 5 ) years; and,
WHEREAS, traffic accidents are the leading cause of
accidental death for young people in Texas and throughout the
nation; and,
WHEREAS, the seriousness of the traffic safety problems in
Texas caused the Governor to convene a task force representing a
broad cross section of leading citizens concerned with or involved
with these problems across our state; and,
WHEREAS, this task force engaged during the past year in
extensive research, study and deliberations to pinpoint Texas' most
serious traffic safety problems and to recommend solutions to them;
and,
WHEREAS, this task force recommends a broad program of new
legislation and other actions aimed principally , but not
exclusively , with getting drunk drivers off the road; and,
WHEREAS, this task force further recommends a
comprehensive program of safe driving leadership, an example by
state and local government employees in this state;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
THAT the City of Beaumont supports the general recommendations of
the Traffic Safety Task Force and pledges its cooperation in
developing the kind of safe driving program within its own
operations that will set a proper example for our citizens.
