PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL of the City of Beaumont this day 01, the _Z 9 Mayor - a PROPOSED TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS City of Beaumont June 8,1982 EXHIBIT "A" T I PROPOSED TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS The citizens of Beaumont have been very supportive of improvements to the community's street and highway system. Currently, bond funds in excess of $33,000,000 have been committed to the city's transportation improvement program. This program is well underway with six projects in various stages of design, construction, or completion. The state highway system consisting of farm-to-market roads, state and federal highways, and the interstate system provides the basic principal network of the city street system. Along these state roadways, such as Major Drive, College, Railroad Avenue, Cardinal Drive and IH-10, the major flow of city traffic travels . This highway system attracts vehicular traffic which would otherwise utilize city local or arterial streets . Because of Beaumont's economy and physical location, the city is the hub of local, regional, and interstate traffic. Traffic demand on Beau- mont's streets and highways are much greater than a typical city of this size. Thus, it is important that an intergrated program of city, state, and federal highway projects be developed and implemented . City Programs A number of street projects have been identified to improve traffic flow in. Beaumont. These projects have been grouped into three catagories: short range, immediate range, and long range. The short range program includes those approved projects currently funded as well as other pro- jects where immediate attention is desirable. 'These projects are listed in Table I . The new segments and projects in this group are recommended for consideration as funds become available. The projects listed in the immediate group, Table II , have recognized needs and are submitted for future planning purposes. The projects submitted in the long range program, Table III, are desirable improvements and are anticipated to be needed in the near future. Together, these projects provide necessary improvements to the city street system and when coordinated with suggested state projects, form the framework for greater mobility to local citizens. State Program The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation has identified five major projects in its "20 Year Plan". For purpose of co- ordinating these with city projects, the state improvements have been subdivided into eight projects . In addition to these eight projects - which are very important, improvement to four additional facilities are recommended for consideration as state funds become available. These pro- jects are provided in Table IV. Additional state funds are urgently needed to construct these important improvements to the area highway system.
