ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 6,
SECTIONS 6-170 AND 6-171 OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES
OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT TO ADOPT THE 1996 EDITION
OF THE INTERNATIONAL MECHANICAL CODE WITH
AMENDMENTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY;
PROVIDING FOR REPEAL AND PROVIDING A PENALTY.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
Section 1.
THAT Chapter 6, Section 6-170 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Beaumont be and the same
is hereby amended to read as follows:
ARTICLE VII. MECHANICAL CODE
Sec. 6-170 There is hereby adopted by the city, for the purpose of establishing rules
and regulations for air conditioning, heating and ventilating equipment, refrigeration,
ducts and duct systems, piping, incinerators and electrical requirements for same, that
certain code known as the International Mechanical Code recommended by the
Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc. being particularly the 1996
Edition, except for Appendices, of which one copy has been and now is filed in the
office of the city clerk for the city and the same is hereby adopted and incorporated
as fully as if set out at length herein, and from the date on which this article shall take
effect. The provisions thereof shall be controlling in the construction of air
conditioning, heating, and ventilating equipment, refrigeration equipment, ducts and
duct systems, piping, incinerators and the electrical requirement for same, save and
except the portions of the International Mechanical Code which are hereby deleted,
substituted, modified or amended as set forth in this article.
Section 2.
THAT Chapter 6, Section 6-171 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Beaumont be and the same
is hereby amended to read as follows:
Sec. 6-171 Code Amendments, Modification and Deletions.

Section 301.7 is amended to read as follows:
Sec. 301.7 Electrical Connections
Sec. 301.7.1 General
All electric connections between fuel-fired appliances, mechanical equipment, etc. and
the building wiring shall conform to N.F.P.A.70 and the currently adopted National
Electrical Code.
Sec. 301.7.2 For new construction, a disconnecting means and one hundred fifteen-
volt outlet shall be installed within sight and easy reach in the under grounded leads
of each power circuit to electrically operated components. The disconnecting means
shall in no case be installed farther than 6 ft. (1829mm) from the service side of the
equipment.
Sec. 301.7.3 For existing construction, disconnecting means [shall be installed] within
sight, not more than 50 ft. (15.2mm) distant from the equipment, and within easy
reach in the ungrounded leads of each power circuit to electrically operated
components.
Section 3 04.10 is added to read as follows:
Sec. 3 04.10 Attic installation.
Every attic or furred space in which mechanical equipment is installed shall be readily
accessible by an opening and passageway as large as the largest piece of the
equipment and in no case less that 2206 inches (559x914mm) continuous from the
opening to the equipment and its controls. The opening to the passageway shall be
located not more than 20 ft. (6096mm)from the equipment measured along the center
line of each passageway. Every passageway shall be unobstructed and shall have solid
continuous flooring not less than 24 inches (610mm) wide from the entrance opening
to the equipment. On the control side and other sides where access is necessary for
servicing the equipment, a level working platform extending a minimum 30 inches
(762mm)from the edge of the equipment with a 3 6 inch (914mm) high clear working
space shall be provided. Top or bottom service equipment shall have a full clearance
above or below the unit for component removal.
Section 501.3.1 is added to read as follows:
Sec. 501.3 Lavatories, Toilets, Bathrooms and Restrooms.
Sec. 501.3.1 Ventilation of bathroom exhaust from one-and-two family dwellings may
be vented into the attic or crawl space, provided this space is ventilated.

Section 3.
THAT if any section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase of this ordinance, or the
application of same to a particular set of persons or circumstances should for any reason held to be
invalid, such invalidity shall not affect the remaining portions of this ordinance, and to such end the
various portions and provisions of this ordinance are declared to be severable.
Section 4.
THAT all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are repealed to the extent of
the conflict only.
Section 5.
THAT any person who violates any provision of this ordinance shall, upon conviction, be
punished as provided in Section 1-8 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Beaumont, Texas.
