WHEREAS; Beaumont will celebrate with the entire Nation the
Bicentennial of the United States in 1976; and,
WHEREAS, the Spindletop Oil Field had one of the most signifi-
cant effects on the Nation historically and economically; and,
WHEREAS, the 75th anniversary of the Lucas Gusher which erupted
January 10, 1901 will also be celebrated in 1976; and,
WHEREAS, the creation of civic and tourist attraction honoring
Spindletop is compatable with the American Revolution Bicentennial Com-
mission of Texas theme, "The Promise of America, Past, Present and
Future"; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that "Spindletop" will be the
main theme of the Beaumont Bicentennial Commission as Beaumont cele-
brates the 200th anniversary of the United States.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I, Ken Ritter, Mayor of the City of Beaumont,
have hereunto set my hand and have caused the Seal of the City of Beau-
mont to be affixed.
