HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 29 ZZ{ o? 9' Z A RE SOLUTION WHEREAS, the 1970 census showed a substantial decline in population in the City of Beaumont, Texas; and, WHEREAS, a sample house-to-house canvass of a partic- ular area in the City, which canvass revealed a substantial variance when compared with the 1970 census figures for the same area, as well as other information available from current public records and elsewhere, indicates the strong probability that the 1970 census of Beaumont is erroneous, and that in- stead of a decline in population, there most probably was an increase in population; and, WHEREAS, the City Council of Beaumont, duly represent- ing the people of Beaumont, is gravely concerned and does believe that the erroneous census will adversely affect the City of Beaumont by discouraging the influx of people and industry; by contradicting the growing reputation of the City of Beaumont as a center of progression and business activity; by discouraging its inhabitants, who have, because of their initiative and energetic efforts, projected an image of pro- gression, only to be told by the Federal Census that they have, indeed, regressed; by jeopardizing the position of the City of Beaumont under -State Statutes, many of which are drafted so as to differentiate cities based on population ranges; and by various and sundry other means adversely affect the City of Beaumont in its relations with neighboring cities.and people; and, WHEREAS, the City Council desires to submit its evidence of an erroneous census, and to request reconsider- ation of what it believes to be an erroneous census of the City of Beaumont; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS: That the Mayor, Ken Ritter, be, and he is hereby, authorized to submit the accumulated evidence indicative of error in taking the 1970 census, and he is further authorized to take all steps necessary to effectuate reconsideration, recount and modification of the 1970 census of the City of Beaumont, Texas. 1970.
