HomeMy WebLinkAboutORD 61 GGENTITLED AN ORDINANCE ORDERING A SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD IN THE CITY OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS, ON THE 7TH DAY OF DECEMBER, 1965, TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE PROPOSED MINIMUM SALARY OF $455.00 PER MONTH FOR FIREMEN AND POLICE- MEN SHALL. BE ADOPTED; NAMING THE PLACES WHERE SAID ELECTION SHALL BE HELD; APPOINTING JUDGES AND ALTERNATES TO PRESIDE OVER SAID ELECTION; PROVIDING FOR THE FORM OF NOTICE THEREOF; PROVIDING FOR THE FORM OF BALLOT FOR USE IN SAID ELECTION; AND PROVIDING THE MANNER OF HOLDING SAID ELECTION. WHEREAS, on September 21, 1965, a petition was filed with the City Council proposing a minimum salary of $455.00 per month for firemen and policemen and calling for an election 9 to determine whether such proposed minimum salary shall be adopted; and, WHEREAS, said petition was signed by a sufficient number of qualified voters of The City of Beaumont; and, WHEREAS, -Article 1583-2 of Vernonts Texas Penal Code, as amended, provides that if such a petition is filed, the City Council shall call an election within ninety (90) days after said petition has been so filed to determine whether said pro- posed minimum salary shall be adopted; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS_ Section 1. That in accordance with the provisions of the laws of the State of Texas, a special election within the corporate limits of The City of Beaumont is hereby ordered to be held on the 7th day of December, 1965, to determine whether the pro. - posed minimum salary of $455.00 per month for firemen and police -- men shall be adopted. Section 2. Legally qualified voters residing within the corporate limits of The City of Beaumont shall be entitled to vote at said election. Section 3. That said election shall be held in the City of Beaumont at the following places, to -wit: Edwards School Building; French High School Building; French Elementary School Building; Longfellow School Building; Averill School Building; County Court House Building; George Washington Carver School Building; David Crockett Junior High School Building; Hebert School Building; L.. R. Pietzsch School Budd- ing; Roy Guess School Building; Amelia School Building; and Sallie Curtis School Building. That all voters residing in County Voting Precincts Nos. 1 and 63 shall vote at the Edwards School Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Precinct No. 2 shall vote at the French High School Building; that all .voters residing in County Voting Precinct Nos. 3 and 8 shall vote at the French Elementary School. Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Precincts Nos. 4 and 5 shall vote at the Longfellow School Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Precincts Nos. 6,'7, 9 and 10 shall vote at the Averill School Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Precinct Nos. 11 and 16 shall vote at the County Court House Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Precinct No. 12 shall vote at the George Washington Carver School Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Precincts Nos. 13, 14, 15 and 17 shall vote at the David Crockett Junior High School Building; that .all voters residing in County Voting Precinct No. 18 shall vote at Hebert School Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Precinct Nos. 19, 20, 64 and 67 shall vote at the L. R...Pietzsch School Building; that all voters residing in County Voting Pre- cincts Nos. 22 and 23 shall vote at the Roy Guess School Build- ing; that all voters residing in County Voting Precincts Nos. 65 and 27 shall vote at the Amelia School Building; and that all voters residing in County Voting Precinct No. 62 shall vote at the Sallie Curtis School Building. /V Section 4. The following named persons are appointed presiding judges for their respective voting boxes, with the authority to select and appoint their own clerks: Edwards School, Mrs. C. C. Moore, (E. E. The mayor is hereby directed to cause the notice of election hereinafter prescribed, together with a copy of this ordinance, signed by himself and attested by the city clerk, to be posted at each of the places herein designated for hold- ing said election, at least twenty (20) days prior to the date of holding said election. "Notice is hereby given that a special election will be held in the City of Beaumont, Texas, on the 7th day of December, 1965, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to determine whether the proposed minimum salary of $455.00 per month for firemen and policemen shall be adopted, all as is more particularly set forth in the copy of the election ordinance passed by the City Council and attached hereto . is Section 6. f,,c The form of ballot which shall be used in said special election shall be substantially as follows: I1FOR the proposed minimum salary of four hundred fifty. -five ($455) dollars per month for firemen and policemen "AGAINST the proposed minimum salary of four hundred fifty. -five ($455) dollars per month for firemen and policemen't Section 7.
