Guiding PhilosophX Members should consider working in or near moving vehicles as a threat to their personal safety, and perform this work so that individual and crew safety is maximized. Proactive incident safety requires an understanding and appreciation of the high risk involved with operating on roadways. Wearing traffic safety vests is one method of reducing this risk. II. Purpose The purpose of this policy is to provide standards for the use of ANSI -compliant traffic safety vests. III. Goals The goals of this policy are to: A. Discuss when traffic safety vests ARE NOT required. B. Communicate when traffic safety vests ARE required. IV. When Traffic Safetv Vests ARE NOT Reauired A. Several unique incident types may be encountered where the donning of a traffic safety vest may actually increase the risk of injury for members, or where wearing of the vest may be otherwise impractical. The required ANSI -compliant traffic "WJ4 f'' f E when a member has donned: safety vest ��....��'.......�����11����������� �" ,I,�Y lel ������������������������� 1 Structural firefighting firefighting personal protective (PPE) — including helmet, bunker pants and bunker coat. 2. Hazardous materials personal protective equipment (PPE) — including Level A, B or C (structural firefighting PPE). 3. Technical rescue personal protective equipment (PPE) — including structural firefighting PPE or technical rescue helmet and harnesses. B. The exemptions listed above apply only to members directly involved in activities within the established hot zone, and only when the hot zone is protected from the hazards of moving traffic by apparatus blocking, lane closures, or other means. V. When Traffic Safety Vests ARE Required A. All other members on scene performing support duties or involved in activities other than those listed in V.A. 1-3 above are required to don ANSI -compliant vests if working in or near vehicular traffic. SOG 303.03 — Use of Traffic Safety Vests Page 1 of 2 B. When members involved in hot zone activities exit the hot zone area, and remove their PPE, they are required to don the ANSI -compliant vests. C. Traffic safety vests shall be stored on each vehicle/apparatus so that they are readily accessible by members. D. The vest shall be donned immediately upon exiting the vehicle or apparatus if personal protective equipment is not donned. SOG 303.03 — Use of Traffic Safety Vests Page 2 of 2
