The goal of this policy is to define the standard of care for any patient presenting with
burns.
II. Definitions
A. Minor Burns — less than 10% body surface area and DOES NOT involve bands,
feet, groin or face.
B. Major Burns —greater than 10% body surface area and involves circumferential
burns to Bands, feet, groin, or face (respiratory tract).
III. Protocol
A. Stop burning process as indicated.
B. Institute protocol "203.01A" for all patients.
C. Remove clothing/debris/jewelry, if not adhered to the burn area.
D. If minor burns:
1. Cool with water.
2. Apply dry sterile dressing.
E. If major burns:
1. Apply dry sterile dressings to affected areas.
2. Prepare for immediate transport.
F. NOTE: Delay application of dressing, if possible, until EMS on scene.
G. Treat for prevention of hypothermia anytime major burns are involved.
