203.01- Basic Life Support Treatment Protocols

I. Guiding PhilosophX
Prompt and properly administered emergency medical care can mean the difference
between life and death in some cases. As authorized by the Medical Director, we strive to
provide a safe and timely response and administer the appropriate pre -defined patient
intervention services based on our scope of practice.
II. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to define the general standards for the delivery of pre-
hospital medical care at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level by authorized members of Beaumont
Fire -Rescue Services.
III. Goals
The goals of this policy are to:
A. Communicate the authorized off-line medical control standards of care to be
implemented by Beaumont Fire -Rescue personnel at the Basic Life Support
(BLS) level.
B. Define the criteria for deviation from the protocols and the responsibilities of the
First Responder if this situation were to occur.
IV. Definitions
Off-line Medical Control — a set of written instructions, approved by the Medical
Director that defines the standard of care that will routinely be practiced.
On-line Medical Control — allows a certified emergency responder to contact a
physician from the field to obtain instructions for further care of a patient.
V. General Statement
A. The Basic Life Support (BLS) protocols that follow reflect the standards for the
delivery of pre -hospital care by authorized members of Beaumont Fire/Rescue

Services. The information contained herein is designed to provide the BLS provider
with guidelines and medical authorization for care in the role as a medical First
Responder.
B. The therapies and interventions listed in each protocol may be initiated without on-
line medical control permission, if the patient meets the criteria indicated on that
protocol.
C. The sequence in which the treatment or intervention items appear in the protocol is
the sequence in which the responder will administer the interventions, unless the
patient's status requires a change in this sequence.
D. Standing orders represent off-line medical control. They are superseded by any
orders received by on-line Medical Control.
E. These protocols are to be utilized as a standard for the treatment of patients in the pre-
hospital setting by authorized Beaumont Fire/Rescue personnel.
F. Each protocol is to be followed as described unless a substitution or modification is
indicated by the unique circumstances of the scene and/or patient(s).
G. Deviations from the protocol must be:
1. In the best interest of the rescuers, patient(s) and/or public.
2. Documented completely as per the applicable policies.
3. Within the authorized scope of practice of the responder.
