Alex A. McClelland Collection, 1930s- 1950s
DESCRIPTION
Captain Alexander "Alex" A. McClelland was a native of Pon Arthur, Texas, who came to Beaumont in
1912. McClelland spent most of his working life working on the waterways in the area. His first job was
selling newspapers around the city docks in Beaumont. Over his lifetime he served as the harbormaster
for the Port of Beaumont; operated the Neches Shipyard; maintained a diving service; and owned the
Beaumont Towing Company which he began in 1927.
This small collection consists mostly of photographs of the Beaumont Towing Company; Alex
McClelland and his wife, Beulah Herbert McClelland; the Port of Beaumont; and tugboats towing ships.
In addition there are newspaper clippings and other items related to the life of Captain Alex McClelland.
