HomeMy WebLinkAboutMIN JAN 13 1981 REGULAR SESSION CITY COUNCIL - CITY OF BEAUMONT HELD JANUARY 13 , 1981 BE IT REMEMBERED that the City Council of the City of Beaumont , Texas, met in regular session this the 13th day of January, 1981 , with the following present : HONORABLE : Maurice Meyers Mayor Tom Combs , Jr. Councilman , Ward I Evelyn M. Lord Councilman , Ward II *Calvin Williams Councilman , Ward III Wayne Turner Councilman , Ward IV Ray Riley City Manager R. E . Platt Asst . City Manager Kenneth Wall City Attorney Myrtle Corgey City Clerk (*Arrived late) -000- The Invocation was given by Pastor Bob Arnold, Christian Touch Center. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Councilman Turner. -000- The following proclamation was issued : "Dr . Martin Luther King Day in Beaumont" - January 15 , 1981 . -000- The following Consent Agenda items were considered : Approval of the Minutes of the regular City Council session held January 6 , 1981 ; Resolution 81-11 authorizing payment of $2 , 121 . 62 to Strand Book Store for books purchased for the Beaumont Public Library ; Resolution 81-12 accepting the bid of Vaughn and Associates for furnish- ing 16 aluminum picnic tables for use in City parks at a cost of $3 ,696.00 ; Resolution 81-13 accepting the bid of Rand Landscaping Company for fur- nishing trees , shrubs and plants for use at the Municipal Airport at a cost of $1 , 328 . 00 and Resolution 81-14 authorizing purchase of repair parts from Bado Equipment Company at a cost of $2 , 255. 00 for a dragline needed to complete the Grant Street drainage improvements . The Consent Agenda was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Turner. Question: Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Ordinance No. 81-1 establishing maximum rates for natural gas service pro- vided by Entex was considered: ORDINANCE NO. 81-1 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE SETTING RESIDENTIAL AND SMALL COMMERCIAL RATES FOR ENTEX, INC. ; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR REPEAL. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and secon- by Councilman Lord. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -4- January 13 , 1981 Ordinance No . 81-2 establishing maximum rates for cablevision service provided by Liberty Communications , Inc . was considered : ORDINANCE NO. 81-2 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING MAXIMUM RATES WHICH MAY BE CHARGED BY LIBERTY T .V. CABLE, INC. FOR CABLE TELEVISION SERVICES WITHIN THE CITY OF BEAUMONT ; ESTABLISHING CONDITIONS ; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR REPEAL. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Lord and secon- ded by Councilman Turner . Question : Ayes : Mayor Meyers Nayes : Councilman Combs Councilman Lord Councilman Turner j -000- Resolution 81-15 authorizing purchase of 0. 195 acre tract out oft he Noah Tevis Survey for Riverfront Park from the Atchison , Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company at $6, 900. 00 was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Turner. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 81-16 authorizing purchase of four trucks - three from Kinsel Ford, Inc. (two to be used by Transportation Department and one by Code Enforcement ) and one truck from Beaumont Motor Company (to be used by Code Enforcement ) at a total expenditure of $44,676 . 55 was approved on a motion made by Councilman Lord and seconded by Councilman Turner . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 81-17 authorizing the execution of a contract with Jennifer Productions , Inc . to provide the Dionne Warwick Show at the Civic Center February 13 , 1981 , was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Turner . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Mr. J . C. Leggett , 1849 Washington Boulevard, addressed Council to speak against the rate increase granted Entex . ( *Councilman Williams arrived during comments being made by Mr . Leggett . ) -000- Ordinance No. 81-3 authorizing sale of property to Allied Union Bank was considered : ORDINANCE NO. 81-3 AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE SALE OF A TRACT OF LAND OUT OF LOTS 3 AND 4 OF THE CALDER COURT ADDITION TO THE CITY OF BEAUMONT, JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS, CONTAINING 10 , 249. 50 SQUARE FEET OF LAND, MORE OR LESS . The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Turner and se- conded by Councilman Williams.
