HomeMy WebLinkAboutMIN JUN 03 1980 REGULAR SESSION CITY COUNCIL —CITY OF BEAUMONT HELD JUNE 3 , 1980 BE IT REMEMBERED that the City Council of the City of Beaumont , Texas, met in regular session this the 3rd day of June, 1980, with the following pre- sent : HONORABLE : Maurice Meyers Mayor Tom Combs, Jr . Councilman, Ward I Evelyn M. Lord Councilman, Ward II Calvin Williams Councilman , Ward III Wayne Turner Councilman, Ward IV Ray Riley City Manager Kenneth Wall City Attorney Myrtle Corgey City Clerk -000- The Invocation was given by the Reverend Joseph Guidry , St . James Metho- dist Church. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Councilman Williams. -000- Mayor Meyers introduced Miss Susan Summons, forward guard for the Lamar University Lady Cardinals Basketball team, and said she will probably be the first Lamar athlete to receive a professional basketball contract when the Women' s Basketball Association holds their college draft in New York on June 16th. Miss Summons was named the Outstanding Woman Athlete at Lamar University for 1979 and received the John Gray/Babe Didrickson Zahar ias Award. -000- The following items were considered as part of the Consent Agenda : The Minutes of the special City Council meeting held May 22 , 1980, and the regular meeting held May 27, 1980; Resolution 80-185 confirming the designation of Beaumont Housing Finance Corporation for certain Federal Tax purposes ; Resolution 80-186 appointing Messrs. W. M. Yates , William 1,11. Phillips , Ralph Leaf & Joseph Deshotel as Directors to the Board of the Beaumont Multi-Family Housing Finance Corporation replacing Mayor Meyers , and Coun- cilmen Lord, Williams and Turner; Resolution 80-187 authorizing payment of $3 ,478. 98 to Gulf States Utilities Company for installation of an 80-foot pole adjacent to Main Street and ap- proving an amendment to an overhead utility easement to provide sufficient safety clearance allowance for construction of the new stage area in the Municipal Auditorium; Resolution 80-188 authorizing purchase of a word processing unit for the Legal Department from A. B. Dick Company @ $14 ,447. 00; and Resolution 80-189 authorizing transmission repairs to a rear-loading refuse truck, Unit 6059, at a cost of $1 , 721 . 00 by Tidelands International , Inc. The Consent Agenda was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Turner. Question Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- -91- June 3 , 1980 Resolution 80-190 authorizing the filing of an application with U.M.T.A. for a grant for purchase of three (3) vans to provide public transportation for the physically handicapped and setting the date of June 17th for a pub- lic hearing on a plan for incorporating transportation for the handicapped into the Beaumont Transit System (93% funded by federal and state grants) was approved on a motion made by Councilman Lord and seconded by Councilman Turner . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-191 approving plans for the City Auditorium Remodeling Pro- ject and authorizing advertisement for bids was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Lord. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-192 authorizing advertisement for bids on the sale of 2 . 398 acres of the former Pennsylvania School site (estimated value $50,000) was approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and seconded by Councilman Combs. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-193 appointing Coopers and Lybrand as independent auditors for Fiscal Year 1980 was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Lord. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Ordinance No. 80-56 abandoning an alley in. Block 10, Jarrett Addition, was considered: ORDINANCE NO. 80-56 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE VACATING AND ABANDONING AN ALLEY LOCATED IN BLOCK 10, OF THE JARRETT ADDITION, BEAUMONT, JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS , AS DESCRIBED HEREIN. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and se- conded by Councilman Combs. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Mr. J. C. Leggett , 1849 Washington Blvd. , addressed Council to complain about high weeds at the intersection of Pennsylvania & Buford Streets. -000- There being no further business, the meeting was recessed before continu- ing with the City Council Workshop Session. -000- I , Myrtle Corgey, City Clerk of the City of Beaumont , Texas , certify that the above is a true copy of the Minutes of the regular City Council session held June 3 , 1980.
