HomeMy WebLinkAboutMIN APR 15 1980 REGULAR SESSION CITY COUNCIL - CITY OF BEAUMONT HELD APRIL 15, 1980 BE IT REMEMBERED that the City Council of the City of Beaumont , Texas , met in regular session this the 15th day of April , 1980, with the follow- ing present : HONORABLE : Maurice Meyers Mayor Tom Combs , Jr. Councilman, Ward I Evelyn Lord Councilman , Ward II Calvin Williams Councilman , Ward III Wayne Turner Councilman , Ward IV Ray Riley City Manager Kenneth Wall City Attorney Myrtle Corgey City Clerk -000- The Invocation was given by the Reverend G. W. Daniels, Sunlight Baptist Church. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Councilman Lord. -000- Mayor Meyers issued the following proclamations : "Barbershop Harmony Day in Beaumont" - April 19, 1980; "Secretaries Week in Beaumont" - April 20-26, 1980 with special attention for "Secretaries Day in Beaumont" - April 23 , 1980; "National Y.W.C.A. Week in Beaumont" - April 20-26 , 1980; "Medical Laboratory Week in Beaumont" - April 13-19, 1980; Salvation Army ' s "Boys Club Week in Beaumont" - April 13-20, 1980 and "Days of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust in Beaumont" - April 13-19, 1980. -000- A motion appointing Calvin Williams as Mayor Pro .Tem was made by Mayor Meyers and seconded by Councilman Combs. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- A motion appointing Evelyn Lord as representative to the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission was made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Williams. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-124 authorizing purchase of land (Lots- 487 , 488 , 489, 490, 491 , 497 and 498 , Block 64 of the Old Town of Beaumont ) for the proposed relocation of the Central Fire Station at an appraised value of $40, 000 was approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and seconded by Councilman Lord. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Ordinance No. 80-34 abandoning a 20-foot alley in Block 15 , West Oakland Addition (requested by Sanfred and Richard Olson) was considered : .ORDINANCE NO. 80-34 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE VACATING AND ABANDON- ING AN ALLEY LOCATED IN BLOCK 15 OF THE WEST OAKLAND ADDITION, BEAUMONT, JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS , AS DESCRIBED HEREIN. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Turner and secon- ded by Councilman Combs . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -68- April 15 , 1980 Ordinance No. 80-35 abandoning a 20-foot alley abutting Lots 6 and 7 Block G, Pennock and Potts Addition, subject to retention of a general utility easement (Shelton Richardson, Jr. requested change) was considered : ORDINANCE NO. 80-35 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE VACATING AND ABANDON- ING AN ALLEY ABUTTING BLOCK G, PENNOCK AND POTTS ADDITION, BEAUMONT, . JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS, AS DESCRIBED HEREIN; PROVIDING FOR THE RETENTION OF A GENERAL UTILITY EASEMENT. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and secon- ded by Councilman Lord. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-125 relating to establishment of a nine-member Transit Ad- visory Committee and appointing Leedy Gilmer , Mike .Maness .and Leonie Bodin for two-year terms and George McLaughlin, John Keelan and Norma Hall for one-year terms was approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and seconded by Councilman Turner. Question : Ayes: All Nayes : None -000- Ordinance No. 80-36 establishing an appropriation in the Public Buildings Fund for an animal shelter , accepting the bid of Gary Clark Construction Company for the construction and authorizing execution of the contract with Change Order No. 1 (reducing contract amount to $294 ,847. 00) was considered: ORDINANCE NO. 80-36 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE APPROPRIATING $350, 000 FROM THE PUBLIC BUILDINGS FUND TO A FUND FOR CONSTRUCTION OF AN ANIMAL SHELTER; AWARDING BID TO GARY CLARK CONTRACTORS, INC. ; APPROV- ING CHANGE ORDER NO. 1 AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and secon- ded by Councilman Lord. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-126 accepting the bid of Consolidated Electrical Distribu- tors for furnishing electrical supplies for use in the installation of traffic signals at a cost of $2, 519. 30 was approved on a motion made, by Councilman Lord and seconded by Councilman Williams . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000-- Resolution 80-127 accepting the bid of Clifford of Vermont for furnishing traffic signal cable at a cost of $6, 162. 00 was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Turner. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-128 accepting the bids of Bruce Wiggins Sports Shop for fur- nishing 90 dozen Restricted Flight Softballs at $38. 99 per dozen and Osh- man' s Athletic Goods , Inc. for furnishing 10 dozen Day-Night Softballs at $37. 94 per dozen was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and Councilman Turner. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -69- April 15 , 1980 y Resolution 80-129 authorizing repairs by Safeway Transmissions to a front- loading refuse truck, Unit 6007 , at a cost of $1 ,778 . 00, was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Lord. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-130 accepting the bid of Gulf Coast Business Forms for fur- nishing statements for use by the Water Commercial Division at a cost of $1 , 989.60 was approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and seconded by Councilman Lord. Question: Ayes : All Nayes : None -000-- Resolution 80-131 accepting the bid of M & I Electric Company for furnish- ing 36 1500-watt Multi-Vapor Base Up Light Bulbs for lighting the softball fields at the Athletic Complex was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilman Williams.
