HomeMy WebLinkAboutMIN FEB 05 1980 REGULAR SESSION CITY COUNCIL - CITY OF BEAUMONT HELD FEBRUARY f, 1980 BE IT REMEMBERED that the City Council of the City of Beaumont Texas , met in regular session this the 5th day of February , 1980 , with the following present : HONORABLE : Maurice Meyers Mayor Tom Combs , Jr. Councilman , Ward I Vi McGinnis Councilwoman , Ward II *Calvin Williams Councilman , Ward III Absent : Leroy Evans Councilman , Ward IV Ray Riley City Manager Myrtle Corgey City Clerk Lane Nichols Asst . City Attorney ( *Councilman Williams arrived late) -000 The Invocation was given by the Reverend W. F. Lescallette , Highland Ave- nue Baptist Church. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Councilwoman McGinnis . -000- Mayor Meyers welcomed students from St . Anthony Cathedral School and Kelly High School . -o0o- The Minutes of the regular City Council session held January 29 , 1980 , were approved on a motion made by Councilwoman McGinnis and seconded by Councilman Combs. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Service Award pins and Retirement plaques were presented. Those in attend- ance were : Retirees receiving plaques were Adam Florence , Sr . , Maintenance Worker with the Sewer Maintenance Division with 27 years of service ani Eddie Busby', Sr ., Equipment Operator with the Solid Waste Division with 26. years of service . Service pins were presented to those with 15 years of service : Jerry E. Bell, Police Sergeant ; Harry Broussard, Equipment Mechanic , Fleet Division ; Joe A. Hebert , Police Sergeant ; Arthur L. Vandorn ; Police Lieutenant and Louis A. White , Tax Appraiser . �. 20-year pins were given to Myrtle M. Corgey , City Clerk, and Samuel H. Marks , Deputy Fire Chief . 25-year pins were given to Ozan B. Goodman, Custodian Leader , Library ; Howard H. Thibodeaux , Park Foreman and Doris H. Thompson , Parking Control Officer' with Traffic . „ } Assistant Chief of Police Clyde C. Rush, and Police Patrolman Sylvester J . Garbo were awarded service pins for 40 years of service to the City of Beau- mont . -000- . V � r -16- February 5 , 1980, Mayor Meyers issued the following proclamations : "Children ' s Dental Health Week in Beaumont" - February 3-9, 1980 and "Sugarless Day" - February 6 ; , 1980; "National Salesmen ' s Month in the City of Beaumont" - February , 1980 ; "LULAC Week in Beaumont" - February 11-17 , 1980; "Vocational Education Week in Beaumont" - February 10-16 , 1980 and "Catholic Schools Week in Beaumont" February 3-9, 1980. (Councilman Williams arrived during the reading of the proclamations . ) -000- Resolution 80-34 authorizing the purchase of Parcel #23 (Buford Street ) for the Buford-Carroll Street Project (720-186-475) at a cost of $15 , 100 .00 was approved on a motion made by Councilwoman McGinnis and seconded by Council- man Combs . Question : Ayes : All Nayes; None -000- Resolution 80-35 accepting the bid of Westinghouse Electric Corporation for repairs to a pump motor for the Water Reclamation Division at a cost of $1 , 035. 00 was approved on a motion made by Councilman� Combs and seconded by Councilwoman McGinnis. Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Ordinance No . 80-10 establishing new tow-away charges was considered : ORDINANCE NO. 80-10 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 26 , SECTION 26-40(f) TO INCREASE WRECKER CHARGES IN IMPOUNDMENT SITUATIONS ; PROVIDING FOR WRITTEN NOTIFICATION OF MAXIMUM WRECKER CHARGES IN IMPOUNDMENT SITUATIONS : REGULATING WHEN STORAGE CHARGES SHALL BEGIN; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING FOR REPEAL; AND PRO- VIDING A PENALTY. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilwoman McGinnis . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 80-36 authorizing the conveyance of property at ;1385 Schwarner to Carrie Zenn Williams as final settlement under the Community Development Block Grant Relocation Assistance Program was approved on a motion made by Councilman Combs and seconded by Councilwoman McGinnis . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- I 1 , Resolution 80-37 accepting the bid of Mine Safety Appliances Company for furnishing a carbon monoxide monitor for the Fire Department at a cost of $1 , 985. 00 was approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and seconded by Councilman Combs . Question : Ayes : All Nayes : None -000- . Mr . Albert C.
