HomeMy WebLinkAboutMIN JUL 01 1975 REGULAR SESSION CITY COUNCIL - CITY OF BEAUMONT HELD JULY 1, 1975 BE IT REMEMBERED that the City Council of the City of Beaumont, Texas , met in regular session this the lst day of July, 1975, with the following present: HONORABLE: Ken Ritter Mayor Don Cash Councilman, Ward I Vi McGinnis Councilwoman, Ward II Calvin Williams Councilman, Ward III Leroy Evans Councilman, Ward IV Howard McDaniel Acting City Manager Lavon Jones Asst. City Attorney -000- The Invocation was given by Reverend G. W. Daniels, Sunlight Baptist Church. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Councilman Williams. -000- Mr. L. F. Ezell, Deputy Director of the Federal Housing Administration, Houston, Texas, presented a check for $629 ,000. 00 for the Community Development Block Grant first year' s funding. -000- The Minutes of the regular session of the City Council held June 24 , 1975, were approved on a motion made by Councilman Williams and seconded by Council- woman McGinnis. Question: Ayes : All Nayes : None -.000- A motion authorizing the advertisement for bids for Central Dictation Equipment for the Police Department (CJC grant in the amount of $20 ,503 . 00) was made by Councilman Williams and seconded by Councilman Cash. Question: Ayes : All Nayes: None -000- A motion authorizing the advertisement for bids for furnishing 25 police cars on a full maintenance lease (City to furnish gasoline and tires) was made by Councilman Cash and seconded by Councilwoman McGinnis. Question: Ayes: All Nayes : None -000- Resolution 75-237 authorizing the award of bids for furnishing twelve 811 x 611 MJ Tees with accessors and six 8" MJ 90 degree Bends with accessors to Utility Supply Company in the amount of $1, 284 . 00; and for furnishing twenty-four com- plete 54" valve boxes to Western Pipe and Supply Co. in the amount of $439 . 20; and for furnishing twenty-four 6" x 6" MJ Swivel Tees with accessors to Rohan Company in the amount of $1, 740. 00 for the Water Department, these being the lowest and best bids received (needed to maintain stock) was approved on a motion made by Councilwoman McGinnis and seconded by Councilman Evans. Question: Ayes : All Nayes: None -000- Ordinance 75-45 changing the zoning of a 0.16 acre lot in Block 9, B.D. Crary Addition from R-2 to LR-1 was considered: -117- July 1, 1975 ORDINANCE NO. 75-45 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 42 OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS, AND IN PARTICULAR THE BOUNDARIES OF THE ZONING DISTRICTS AS INDICATED UPON THE ZONING MAP OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS, BY CHANGING A 0.16 ACRE LOT IN BLOCK 9 IN THE B. D. CRARY ADDITION TO THE CITY OF BEAUMONT, JEFFER- SON COUNTY, TEXAS, AS HEREINAFTER DESCRIBED PRESENTLY ZONED "R-211 , TO "LR-1" ; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING A PENALTY. The ordinance was approved on a motion made by Councilman Cash and seconded by Councilman Evans. Question: Ayes : Mayor Ritter Abstained: Councilman Williams Councilman Cash Councilwoman McGinnis Councilman Evans -000- - motion authorizing payment for Notary Bonds on City Employees was made by Councilman Evans and seconded by Councilman Williams. Question: Ayes: All Nayes: None -000- Councilman Cash said he appreciated the position taken by the Charitable Solici- tations Commission and the Better Business Bureau in the recent fund raising operation sponsored by the Sheriff' s Department and Sheriff Culbertson' s quick compliance with their decision to stop the operation. After a brief discussion, it was decided that Council would meet with the Char- itable Solicitations Commission on some Tuesday mutually agreeable to both groups to discuss modifications of the Charitable Solicitations Ordinance. -000- Councilman Cash asked that a resolution be drafted commending Al Lester for the service he has rendered the Council and the City of Beaumont. All members of Council readily agreed to this suggestion. -000- In answer to a question by Mayor Ritter, Chief of Police Willie Bauer told Council the Beaumont Police Department is to receive grants totaling $204 ,000 for 1975. -000- Mr. C. L. Sherman, Jr. , 585 Belvedere, told Council he was appearing on behalf of Mr. Jim McNicholas and the Chamber of Commerce Environmental Cleanup Commit- tee. He told Council that 95 people are to be made available through the E.E.O.C. with no cost to the City and could be used tc cleanup Beaumont. He invited Council and the news media to attend a meeting today at 1 : 30 p.m. at the E.E.O.C. Office to discuss this. He told Council that supervision was needed for the 95 and asked if the City could furnish such.
