HomeMy WebLinkAboutMAY 17 1974 SPECIAL SESSION CITY COUNCIL - CITY OF BEAUMONT HELD MAY 17, 1974 BE IT REMEMBERED that the City Council of the City of Beaumont, Texas, met in special session this the 17th day of May, 1974, with the following present: HONORABLE: Ken Ritter Mayor Don Cash Councilman, Ward I Leroy Evans Councilman, Ward IV Absent: George Dishman, Jr. Councilman, Ward II Calvin Williams Councilman, Ward III ' Appointed officials: Kenneth Devero City Manager Kenneth Wall City Attorney Myrtle Corgey City Clerk -000- The Invocation was given by Councilman Don Cash. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Councilman Leroy Evans. -000- An ordinance canvassing the votes cast in the General Municipal Election held May 14, 1974, and calling for a run-off election for candidates in Ward II was considered: (ordinance typed in part. ) ORDINANCE NO. 74-38 ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE CANVASSING THE RETURNS OF THE REGULAR CITY ELECTION WHICH WAS HELD ON THE 14TH DAY OF MAY, 1974, AND ORDERING A RUN-OFF ELECTION TO BE HELD IN THE CITY OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS, ON THE 28TH DAY OF MAY, 1974, TO DETERMINE WHO SHALL BE COUNCILMAN IN WARD 11; NAMING THE PLACES WHERE SAID ELECTION SHALL BE HELD; APPOINTING OFFICERS TO PRESIDE OVER SAID ELECTION; PROVIDING FOR THE FORM OF NOTICE THEREOF; PROVIDING FOR THE FORM OF BALLOT FOR USE IN SAID ELECTION; AND PROVIDING THE MANNER OF HOLD- ING SAID ELECTION; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR REPEAL. WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Beaumont, in session duly called on the 9th day of April, 1974, called the regular City election to be held on the 14th day of May, 1974, and the election returns of the votes cast in said election were duly canvassed for the following officials and proposi- tion: For the officer for the office of Mayor; For the officer for the office of Councilman for the lst Ward; For the officer for the office of Councilman for the 2nd Ward; For the officer for the office of Councilman for the 3rd Ward; For the officer for the office of Councilman for the 4th Ward; To determine whether the City must adopt the State law applicable to fire fighters and policemen which establishes collective bar- gaining and the conditions therefor; and, WHEREAS, after duly canvassing said returns, the City Council found that the votes cast at said election for the several candidates for said offices and the proposition were as follows: For Mayor Gee A. Leroy Evans For the proposition that the City must adopt the State law applicable to fire fighters and policemen which establishes collective bargaining and the conditions therefor. -2- Section 2. That in accordance with the provisions of the City Charter of the City of Beaumont and the laws of the State of Texas relating thereto, there shall be held in the City of Beaumont on the 28th day of May, 1974, a run-off elec- tion for the purpose of electing an officer for the office of Councilman from the 2nd Ward.
