RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, plans have been announced for the inauguration of an annual award to honor
the outstanding female amateur athlete of the year, to be known as the Babe Zaharias Award;
and,
WHEREAS, this awards program will memorialize Babe Didrikson Zaharias as the world's
greatest woman athlete and call attention to Beaumont as her home town; and,
WHEREAS, the first of the awards will be presented here on December 5 in ceremonies
expected to make Beaumont the focus of attention of the sports world; and,
WHEREAS, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Babe Didrikson Zaharias
Foundation have assigned a top priority to this program which will involve sports world
dignitaries and authorities in the process of selecting the outstanding female athlete;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
THAT the Babe Zaharias Awards program be, and is hereby, assured of the full and
enthusiastic support of the City of Beaumont and that the sum of $25,000, be and is hereby,
earmarked for the program from revenues from the Hotel/Motor Hotel Transient Room
Occupance Tax, and that all citizens of this community are hereby urged to join with the City
Council and sponsors in efforts to promote the program and insure its success.
PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL of the City of Beaumont this the day of
1990.
