R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the President of the United States has announced
his support for building the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) ,
a major high energy research laboratory; and,
WHEREAS, the Department of Energy will issue an
invitation for site proposals in April with submittals due by
August; and,
WHEREAS, the SSC project will employ approximately 6,000
during construction and 2,500 permanent employees; and,
WHEREAS, the land near Liberty, Texas, called the
Houston-Beaumont site, meets the site requirements for proximity to
an international airport, metropolitan area and major universities,
as well as the geo-technical requirements; and,
WHEREAS, business and civic leaders from Harris, Liberty,
Chambers, Hardin, Jefferson and Orange Counties are united in a
multi-county Task Force to pursue the SSC project;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
THAT the City of Beaumont endorses the selection of the Houston
Beaumont site for the SSC.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Beaumont pledges
its support and assistance to the Houston-Beaumont SSC Site Task
Force and the State of Texas in their efforts to attract the SSC to
Southeast Texas.
