WHEREAS, the Big Thicket National Preserve was established by the U.S.
Congress in 1974; and the land authorized in PL 93-439 has been acquired; and
WHEREAS, Visitor Center construction has not been funded, and the lack of that
facility limits severely the public's access to information and to interpretation of this
outstanding resource, and
WHEREAS, the Big Thicket National Preserve officials and the U.S. National Park
Service have explored alternative sources of funding, have revised specifications, and yet
the project remains on indefinite hold;
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
THAT the National Park Service expedites bidding and construction of a Big Thicket
National Preserve Visitor Center; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that our U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators join
us in this request for appeal.
