ORDINANCE NO. 3 7
ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE
84-20, THE GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION
ORDINANCE TO PROVIDE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF
A PROPOSITION CONCERNING CHANGING THE NAME
OF WASHINGTON BOULEVARD TO MARTIN LUTHER
KING, JR. BOULEVARD; PROVIDING FOR NOTICE;
AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY.
WHEREAS, on the 31st day of January , 1984, the City Council
adopted Ordinance 84-20 ordering the general municipal election to
be held in the City of Beaumont, Texas on the 7th day of April,
1984 ; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to submit to a referendum
an ordinance changing the name of Washington Boulevard to Martin
Luther King, Jr. Boulevard; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council believes that this matter should
be submitted to the voters at such general election pursuant to the
referendum provisions of Article XI, Section 7 e t.seq. of the
Charter of the City of Beaumont;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE
CITY OF BEAUMONT:
Section 1 .
That Ordinance 84-20 of the City of Beaumont be and the same is
hereby amended to amend Section 1 to read as follows:
That in accordance with the provisions of the Charter
of the City of Beaumont and the laws of the State of
Texas relating thereto, there shall be held in the
City of Beaumont on April 7 , 1984, a regular municipal
election for said city for the purpose of electing a

Mayor, two Councilmen at Large, a Councilman for
Ward I , a Councilman for Ward II, a Councilman
for Ward III, and a Councilman for Ward IV for
said City. In addition, the ordinance attached
hereto as Exhibit "A" shall be submitted to the
electors of the City of Beaumont for approval or
rejection at said regular general election to be
held within the City of Beaumont on the 7th day
of April, 1984.
Section 2.
That notice of said election shall be given by publishing
said notice as set out herein in a newspaper of general circulation
in the City and County one time, not more than twenty-five ( 25)
days nor less than ten ( 10) days before said election. Said notice
shall be in the following form:

FOR THE PURPOSE OF APPROVING OR REJECTING AN
ORDINANCE TO PROVIDE FOR THE CHANGING OF THE
NAME OF WASHINGTON BOULEVARD TO MARTIN LUTHER
KING, JR. BOULEVARD.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT A REFERENDUM ELECTION
AS PROVIDED BY ARTICLE XI, SECTION 7 , ET.SEQ. OF
THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT WILL BE HELD
IN THE CITY OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS ON THE 7TH DAY OF
APRIL, 1984, FROM 7 : 00 A.M. TO 7 :00 P. M. FOR THE
PURPOSE OF APPROVING OR REJECTING AN ORDINANCE
CHANGING THE NAME OF WASHINGTON BOULEVARD TO MARTIN
LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD.
Section 3 .
The form of ballot which shall be used in said referendum
election shall be substantially as follows:

Section 4.
That all sections of Ordinance 84-20 adopted by the City
Council of the City of Beaumont on January 31, 1984, which are not
in conflict with the provisions of this ordinance, are hereby
adopted and incorporated herein by reference.
Section 5.
That if any section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase
of this ordinance, or the application of same to a particular set
of persons or circumstances, should for any reason be held to be
invalid, such invalidity shall in no wise affect the remaining
portions of this ordinance, and to such end the various portions
and provisions of this ordinance are declared to be severable.

WASHINGTON BOULEVARD TO MARTIN LUTHER KING,
JR. BOULEVARD; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY
AND PROVIDING FOR REPEAL.
Section 1 .
That the name of Washington Boulevard in the City of
Beaumont, Texas be and the same is hereby , changed to Martin Luther
King, Jr . Boulevard.
Section 2.
That it any section, subsection, sentence, clause or
phrase of this ordinance, or the application of same to a
particular set of persons or circumstances, should for any -reason
be held to be invalid, such invalidity shall not affect the
remaining portions of this ordinance, and to such end the various
portions and provisions of this ordinance are declared to be
severable.
Section 3.
That all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict
herewith are repealed to the extent of the conflict only.
